十八伽藍(lán)神原來都是古印度神話傳說中的神祇，后作為神，維護寺院僧事活動的正常開展。根據(jù)《七佛八菩薩所說大陀羅尼神咒經(jīng)》卷四所說：“護僧伽藍(lán)神有十八人：一名美音、二名梵音、三名天鼓、四名嘆妙、五名嘆美、六名摩妙、七名雷音、八名師子、九名妙嘆、十名梵響、十一名人音、十二名佛奴、十三名頌德、十四名廣目、十五名妙眼、十六名徹聽、十七名徹視、十八名遍視?！?

寺廟銅神像

根據(jù)唐密祖師、「開元三大士」之一的不空所譯《菩提心論》記載，大日如來為教化眾生，將其自身具備的五智變化為五方五佛：中央毗盧遮那佛（大日如來）代表法界體性智；東方阿閦佛，代表大圓鏡智；南方寶生佛，代表平等性智；西方阿彌陀佛，代表妙觀察智；北方不空成就佛，代表成所作智。正中一尊，為中央世界毗盧遮那佛（大日如來），代表佛的清凈功德，表法界體性智。左下一尊，為東方世界阿閦佛（不動如來），表覺性及大圓智。右下一尊，為北方世界不空成就佛（不空成就如來），表弘法利生的事業(yè)及成所作智。左上一尊，為南方世界寶生佛（寶生如來），表佛德及平等性智。右上一尊，為西方世界阿彌陀佛，表智慧功德及妙觀察智。
